The Flag Day Festival Student and Adult Flag Art Contest ("Contest") Official Rules
The mission of Flag Day Festival is to revitalize the Flag Day tradition with an entertaining and patriotic celebration that delights children, unites people of all backgrounds, and fosters lifelong pride in our flag and our freedom. The Somerville Elks Lodge #1068 (“Sponsor”) desires to advance this mission by rewarding the creation and sharing of inspiring and patriotic art.
We encourage all participants and residents of Central New Jersey to come to Flag Day Festival at the Somerset County Courthouse grounds on Main Street in Somerville, N.J. where the winners will be chosen that day from among the Finalists who bring their artwork to be judged the morning of Flag Day Festival.

Eligibility & Categories:
There are two Categories in the Contest and three Finalists and one Winner will be chosen in each Division in each Category.
The Contest is open to residents of New Jersey in three Divisions:
Division 1 - Students - Grades 7-9
Division 2 - Students - Grades 10-12
Division 3 - Adults – 18 and older
Category 1 - Photography & Digital Image Flag Art
Category 2 - Flag Fine Art Any medium other than photography or digital images accepted. Original must be two-dimensional and a minimum of 5” x 7” and maximum of 16” x 20”.
All photography, digital images and fine art (“Artwork”) must be entered online with a still digital image of the artwork. No original artwork is accepted. There is no fee to enter this Contest. Home schooled students are welcome.
Only one submission per entrant will be considered per Category. Any Artwork entered must be entirely the artist's original artwork. No copyrighted work may be used. Plagiarism will result in disqualification. Artwork should not be signed on the front of the piece.
The Contest will be judged by Steven Speeney, a professional artist and art teacher. Students of the judge are not eligible. Finalists and Winners will be selected based on the following criteria: patriotic artwork that prominently includes the American Flag and that demonstrates creativity and artistic quality. Only submissions that comply with the rules will be judged. The decisions of the judge are final.
If you are selected as a Finalist, you will be invited to participate in an Art Show at the AT&T store in the Bridgewater Commons Mall on May 19, 2017. Participation is encouraged, but not required.
Finalists must print photographs and digital images at a size of either 11” x 14” or 12” x 16”, matted and framed, with a maximum frame size of 16’ x 20”, and with a wire so they are ready for hanging for the Art Show and to bring for final judging at Flag Day Festival. Finalists must make all other fine art ready to hang, with paintings on canvas frames wired for hanging (no additional frame is needed) and other fine art matted, framed, and wired.
Finalists or their representatives must bring their Artwork to the Somerset County Courthouse grounds by 11 am the morning of Flag Day Festival to be judged and to have the opportunity to be named a Winner. Note that there is a rain date so Finalists must be prepared to bring their Artwork either day. The Winner will be announced between noon and 1 pm at Flag Day Festival. Finalists are responsible for their own Artwork at all times, including during the Art Show and at Flag Day Festival where the Finalist or a representative must be present.
Winners will be awarded an American Flag, a $100 gift card, and four Somerset Patriots tickets to the June 17, 2017 ballgame where they will be recognized on the field and with a display of their artwork on the digital scoreboard during the fireworks show. The names and Artwork of the Finalists and Winners may be displayed across social media. Winners are responsible for all transportation and other costs associated with attending the ballgame. Art teachers of winning students whose names and contact information were entered at the time of entry will receive a $100 gift card.
Void outside of N.J. and where prohibited. Sponsor is not responsible if Contest cannot take place, or if any prize cannot be awarded due to delays or failures due to acts of God, acts or threats of terrorism, acts of government, or infection by computer virus, technical failures, or other events outside of the reasonable control of Sponsor. Sponsor reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to cancel, modify, or suspend the Contest or any part of the Contest or the prize if it determines that the Contest is not capable of running as planned. This Contest is in no way sponsored, endorsed or administered by, or associated with, Facebook. By participating in this Contest, you agree that Sponsor may collect and use your personal information for future contests. To be eligible for judging, each entry must include all of the required fields (red *) and required information for students shown below and include the electronically signed Release form below by adult entrants and by the parent or guardian of each student under 18.
