Wicklow Sudbury is a not-for-profit independent school and registered Irish charity (CHY 22018). All income from tuition fees goes to the running of the school (rent, staff pay, utilities, insurance, materials etc). As we do not receive any state support, we actively apply for grants and continuously engage in fundraising within our community but still rely heavily on tuition fees to ensure the financial sustainability of the school. We ask that you please assess your ability to pay the fees before submitting your application. School fees are shown in brackets in the next question.

In WSS no subject or interest is seen as more important or valuable than another. We will not force or manipulate students into doing Maths, Irish or English for example. Do you agree with this?

Are you prepared for your child to seemingly 'do nothing' for a period of time as they decompress and find their way into self-directed living?
*

Maybe
Students often hear about the importance of the leaving cert, or of the tests and subjects their friends are taking and can understandably wonder if their education is as good considering how different it is. In these instances support and reassurance from home is crucial as, if students sense similar concerns from parents it can be incredibly undermining and lead to a self-fulfilling prophecy. Do you feel prepared to handle this possibility?
*
Yes
No
We strive to preserve young people's imaginations, initiative and mental health from the harm done to them when subjected to authoritative teaching, rote memorization for standardized tests, and negation of their voice. However, a democratic school is not a happiness machine. They must still undergo the challenging process of figuring out who they are, what they enjoy, finding a meaningful path in life, navigating relationships and all the other things that can make being a young person or just a human so hard. They will face these problems and may well have difficult periods. They will still live in a world where mainstream media, their peers, movies, ads and friends could put pressure on them and promote toxic ideas. We have limited control over those things however we can, through a process of support, listening and empowering students, help them find the power to change what they can and the wisdom to know what they can't, as they say, and get through it. This depends on an open dialogue between student, staff and parents. What are your thoughts on this statement?

What is your understanding of what a Democratic School is:
Attending a democratic/Sudbury School comes with a lot of freedom compared to traditional schools. It also comes with a responsibility to direct your own learning, engage with staff and other students and to think about how your attitude and actions are contributing to your community. How do you feel about taking on this responsibility and being challenged to take the initiative in your own education?
