    • Your child or teen puts off doing work for two reasons. Firstly they may simply struggle with time management and be physically unable to organise their time effectively to complete the assignments given to them. A tutor will most certainly be able to help in this department. A tutor will check homework regularly to make sure it has been done and help with any areas where the student struggled. They will also be able to create a timetable to help with time management. Secondly it may be because your child or teen is struggling to understand the assignments or lacks confidence in answering them. A tutor here can provide specific help on the exact topic or subject where the student lacks confidence or understanding, explaining difficult concepts in a way that the student understands and remembers. Additionally the tutor can introduce specialist study techniques that help students understand how to go about answering homework giving the student confidence that they can do it.

    • Your child or teen takes a long time to complete homework. This is a sign of inefficient working methods. One thing that many school teachers fail to cover is exam or question answering technique and study methods and it is one of the most valuable things a tutor can help with. It provides students with the tools to effectively study, revise, and form answers by themselves across all their subjects and throughout their school career. Without this students often know the answer to a question but cannot effectively express themselves which means it takes them a long time to answer and they get a poor mark. This is extremely frustrating and confusing and often convinces students they are stupid or that they never knew the answer in the first place, stripping them of any confidence and often leading to them not wanting to do or procrastinating over homework.

    • You feel like getting your child to do homework or sitting down to help them with their homework is like walking into World War Three Although there are certainly students who just aren't putting the effort in to complete their homework or think that homework is not important, there are also many times when students get overwhelmed by their homework and shut down. In both cases it is not the students fault and they either lack motivation or simply don’t know how to cope with the workload. Some children get upset more easily when their parents help them because they feel like they are letting them down or disappointing them if they don't get something right away. Other kids are resistant to their parent's help because of other factors in the relationship. Bringing a tutor into the equation really simplifies the relationship and provides for a designated time to get things done.

    • Slipping grades is a clear sign that something has gone wrong in the learning process. That could be new distractions in school or at home or it could be that the student missed or didn’t understand something in class or simply that the material is getting more challenging. Whatever the reason a tutor will be able to pinpoint what is going wrong and bring the student back upto speed with the class material allowing the student to re engage with the class material and learn effectively from the teacher instead of being left behind and spiralling into a cycle of confusion, confounding the problem.

    • Some children or teenagers are embarrassed about lagging behind the class and will start looking for excuses to skip school, if you notice other behavior problems, such as your child or teen being irritable or getting frustrated at small things more often, this could be a sign that something is bothering them regarding school or homework. In this scenario some one-on-one attention can be really helpful, these students want to do well at school and their behavior is a cry for help. For this reason they are very receptive to tutoring and though they may not like the idea to begin with they often transform the most because of it.

    • Your child or teen works hard but is getting mediocre results. This is more common than you would expect and a tutor can really help here because half the battle is already won, namely motivating the student to put in the hard work. A tutor can have a large impact by simply introducing efficient working techniques and simplifying complex concepts.

    • Your child or teen is expressing specific frustration towards a particular subject or teacher. Obviously this is a sign that they struggle with the subject in general or don’t learn from that teacher's particular teaching style but many parents shrug this off as general complaining or whinging. This situation is good for a tutor because the student knows what the problem is (that’s why they are complaining) so the tutor can focus on that issue.

    • Your child or teen gets angry, annoyed or irritable when you try to explain something they don’t understand. This is extremely frustrating, especially for the parents who are only trying to help. It can be hard to understand why your child or teen acts this way and many conclude that they must not want your help or they just don’t like you, which in turn leads to parents telling themselves they did everything they could by trying to help but their child or teen doesn’t want it, so there’s nothing else they can do. Your child or teen doesn't want your help because they are worried they will be found out for not knowing enough or not being good enough because they haven’t done enough work. They are unsure of what is expected of them and they would rather you didn’t help because that may result in you finding out. They often assume you know far more about their studies than you actually do and they don’t want to let you down. This is simply the complexities of parent child or teen relationships and it’s very hard to break this impasse. A tutor however has a completely educational relationship with the student and this is empowering in contrast.

    • A parent's intuition should never be underestimated, if you suspect your child or teen to have a learning difficulty you should get them tested as soon as possible. If it is confirmed they may be entitled to additional support in school and extra time in exams. One-on-one tuition is invaluable for those with learning difficulties not because they aren’t clever but because they learn differently to most other kids so where a teacher may not be able to get through to a student a tutor will as they will be able to explain a concept in many different ways until one works. Those with learning difficulties also often struggle with time management which a tutor can help with.
