An Executor (male) or Executrix (female) is a person appointed by you who will be responsible for seeing that your Last Will and Testament is carried out.
You do not have to appoint an executor/executrix. However, if you do not name an executor/executrix the court will appoint one.
You can appoint more than one person to be executor/executrix of your will.
If you appoint an executor/executrix, you will need to name an alternate as well.
